Kasting Call

I stumbled on a family posing in front of the Washington Monument. I generally don't ask people to pose, but, this young gentlemans hat and flourescent t-shirt was too much of a photographic invitation to pass up. I have been composing this shot in my mind for quite some time... a great photo opportunity!

I used an SB-800 off camera flash with a warming gel and used my hands to snoot the flash for a slight fill in flash. I used a rear curtain sync with the flash and had a manual shutter speed of 2.5 seconds to properly expose the sky, monument and flag. The long exposure gave me enough time to depress my cable release and then cup my hands around the flash to form and aim the snoot. I didn't want too much light spilling on his t-shirt as this would have washed out the image. I wanted the bulk of light on the background monument. I had to work very quickly as the sky was quickly fading from navy to black!

it would probably have been better if I hadn't worn a black shirt...the bulk of the cut is just above shoulder length. Typically when I donate hair, I have it cut shorter, but I'm thinking about playing with color (actually having the color put in underneath the top layer of hair for easier maintenance) - and having it re-cut to best show off the color "accents". I let the stylist do whatever she wanted, as long as it was easy to maintain and care for - so now I have some light layering and long fringe....it's so much cooler :) and just in time for the temps to hit 100+ down here!
